This ongoing project is part of a series examining the presence of Sargassum in the Caribbean. It began with an encounter in St Kitts while visiting family, on my first return to the Caribbean in eight years. The arrival of Sargassum challenged my idealised memory of the landscape. It revealed a tension between my initial perception of it as an intruder and the recognition that it perhaps belonged there more completely than I did. Through painting, I am exploring the relationship between memory, ecology and belonging, and questioning how we might understand our place within changing landscapes.
