Artist Statement

My practice focuses on both internal and external landscapes. I am interested in the specificity of place and the nuances that unravel themselves with keen observation. Transcending the literal, I work to portray the distinct character of a landscape, conveying my impression of the feeling, the atmosphere, and the experiential sensations associated with each site. Environmental decay, erosion and pollution are themes that often permeate my explorations, with concern for the climate crisis and its direct impact on the landscapes I aim to represent.

My works typically stem from close examination, involving extensive documentation that utilizes photography, video, and audio as primary media. While sifting through the marvelous and the mundane, I begin to hone key patterns, conventions and characteristics that guide me to my final medium. Ultimately, I aim to create immersive, experiential artwork that enables audiences to share a first-hand experience, engaging and empathizing with the particularity of a given location.

I wonder what it means to be present in space, acting on/reacting to our surroundings. I have a strong interest in modes of accessibility, understanding that everyone moves through life and space differently, and I believe it is necessary to probe the ways we "use" (and abuse) both our environmental and interpersonal resources. I am fascinated by the push and pull between interior and exterior realms, our perception of these transitions, and am looking for ways to identify, preserve and relate to these as personal and collective histories in my work.
